Working in the “front of the house” is hard work. Waitstaff is the common phrase.
The best staff make it look easy with a ready smile and an easy manner and grace, all of which conceal the tornado of activity going on in that brain.
Waitstaff get rewarded when the food is good and punished when it is bad. They are the front line of offense when a customer is displeased. Being the face of the place and the one who gets to bear the burden of the displeasure is sometimes a lot.
Then, to add injury to insults, the state takes some of what was earned: they tax the gratuity. Most foul.
So, give a gift instead of a tip.
Yeah, there’s a very good chance the management will not appreciate the distinction, but in the spirit of rewarding work with no strings, I’ve these cards I give.
